SENIOR SERVICES & MEDICARE RESOURCES

Does Medicare cover long-term care?

Medicare generally does not pay for long-term custodial care. That is different from skilled nursing care, which has separate coverage conditions. Check the exact service and your circumstances with official sources and the care organization.

Start by naming the service

Ask whether the proposed service is help with everyday living, skilled nursing care or another service. A facility’s name alone does not determine which benefit, if any, applies.

Questions for the care organization

Ask what services are included, who provides them, what payer requirements apply and what you may need to pay. Confirm the answer before assuming a stay or service will be covered.

Use an official reference

Medicare.gov explains the distinction between long-term custodial care and skilled nursing care. The link below is a starting point, not an individual coverage determination.

Common questions

Does living in a nursing home mean Medicare covers the stay?

No. The type of care, coverage rules and personal circumstances matter. Do not assume payment from the facility label alone.
